Shroomtoshi, as characterized by Sotheby’s, is not just a technically adept digital artist but also a trailblazer in the flourishing Ordinal ecosystem, showcasing an encyclopedic understanding of Bitcoin.

In his reflections, the artist conveyed, Super Mario

The BitcoinShrooms collection acts as a pixelated retrospective covering the initial 13 years of Bitcoin, paying homage to the 8-bit art style that subtly evokes nostalgia for the ’90s. It serves as a method to imprint my art on tens of thousands of SSDs globally (-> next-level cyber-vandalism), functioning as a tool to promote awareness about Bitcoin and what I perceive as its fundamental principles.

It represents an ironic expression of frustration toward what I see as the annoying pop elements and aberrations within Bitcoin. Additionally, it stands as a token of gratitude to those I collaborated with and learned from, as well as a tribute to those no longer present but should not be forgotten. The collection encapsulates condensed knowledge and offers a journey for the curious.

Ordinals represent the non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the Bitcoin ledger.

It’s worth noting that the terms ‘inscriptions’ and ‘ordinals,’ while often used interchangeably, carry distinct meanings. An ordinal refers to the asset itself—the unique, serialized satoshi that its owner can transfer. On the other hand, an inscription denotes the encoded media content embedded within the ordinal.

Sotheby’s has been actively involved in the NFT space. In June, the auction house successfully auctioned digital collectibles from the bankrupt Singaporean crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC), fetching a total of $10.9 million. Additionally, in May, Sotheby’s introduced an NFT secondary marketplace, enabling users to purchase curated NFTs on the Ethereum and Polygon networks.
